Invert Rotate

Going to be showing something a little bit different. Usually things around here are about expanding/contracting or skewing. I talk more about those things than the Rotate Cube. Well, for this discussion, the Rotate Cube is just what the guru ordered.

Here is our base D-Map. Across the top are Red, Green, and Blue channels. Yes, that is the Rotate Cube.

But we need to dress it up a bit for tweakable inverting.

There we go. Start a new Layer, give it a Gradiant like so, and set the blending mode to Exclusion.

Tada! That's what our D-Map now looks like. That's what the seperate channels and the composite look like..

Tweakness Phase I complete. Let's take it for a quick spin. Save it as a PSD and let's get busy.

Going to be using this for our target. Sorry, no Biker Chic. This picture is more conducive for getting the point across.

That's what the D-Map does with Horizontal: 20% and Vertical: 20%.

Even though there is a bit of a curve to those lines, they are still linear. Let's fix that with Curves!

Just add a Curves Adjustment Layer and clip it to the Exclusion Layer. Make sure that Blend Clipped Layers as Group is turned on - very important if you don't want funkiness!.

Save that D-Map as a PSD and let's get busy again! Goose bump yet?

There it is again with Horizontal: 20% and Vertical: 20%.

Almighty! That is fantabulous!

Going through this whole thing, I showed a lot more than I usually do. Guess I'm just in one of those moods. However, there is something that I didn't talk about: how the Curves Ad-Layer affects the distortion. Fortunately, it's not that hard to figure out. With a little bit of experimenting, you should be able to see how the Curves Ad-Layer affectst the rotation. Don't be shy. Go ahead and play. After all, this D-Map is a tweakable.
